What Preferred status actually requires.

Owens Corning's contractor network has multiple tiers. The Preferred tier is the standard certified-installer designation. Reaching it requires that the contractor:

• Be a licensed and insured roofing contractor in good standing.
• Pass Owens Corning's vetting and onboarding for installation specifications.
• Maintain workers' compensation and general liability insurance at OC's required minimums.
• Install to OC's published specifications across the system — not just the shingle, but the underlayment, the ice & water shield, the starter strip, the hip and ridge cap, the ventilation balance.
• Pass periodic re-certification audits.

The point of the program, from OC's side, is that a manufacturer-certified install is the only kind of install where OC stands behind the system warranty. From a homeowner's side, the value is the labor coverage that comes with the extended warranty — bare manufacturer warranties cover the shingle, but not the cost of having someone come back to fix the install.

How the system warranty works.

Owens Corning shingle warranties have two parts: the limited lifetime shingle warranty (defects in the shingle material) and the system warranty (the install plus matched components). The system warranty is the one that actually matters for most homeowners.

Within the system warranty, there are several named extensions:

Whatever warranty applies to your install gets registered with OC by the contractor at the time of the job. Keep the warranty registration paperwork — if you ever sell the home, transferring the warranty to the next owner is a real selling point.

Duration vs Oakridge — real-world differences.

Owens Corning's two main architectural shingle lines for residential roofs are TruDefinition Duration and Oakridge. Both look "architectural" — neither is a 3-tab. The differences matter when you're choosing.

Color choice — what works on St. Louis brick.

St. Louis housing stock skews heavily toward brick and brick-and-siding combinations: red brick, buff brick, painted brick, brick with vinyl above the gables. The shingle has to land against the brick without fighting it.

• Red and orange-toned brick — Estate Gray, Slate Gray, Onyx Black, or Driftwood read cleanly. Avoid warm browns; they compete with the brick.
• Buff and tan brick — Driftwood, Teak, Brownwood, or Aged Cedar warm-tone naturally. Onyx Black works as a high-contrast option.
• White and painted brick — Anything works visually, but Estate Gray, Onyx Black, and the Designer line (Williamsburg Gray, Pacific Wave) tend to land sharpest.
• Mixed brick + siding (gables, dormers) — Match the shingle to the dominant material on the front elevation. The dormer siding rarely wins this fight.

The honest version of Preferred vs Platinum.

Some St. Louis roofers list "Owens Corning" in their footer with no certification at all (which is allowed — anyone can install OC shingles). Others list "Preferred" but quote warranty language that only applies to Platinum-tier contractors. The differences matter, and homeowners should ask:

• Are you Preferred or Platinum? Either is real. Neither is required to install OC shingles. But the warranty you actually receive depends on the answer.
• Which extended warranty are you registering on this job? If the contractor can't name the specific warranty, they probably aren't registering one.
• Can I see the warranty registration after install? Yes. You should receive the registration documents.
