A St. Louis architectural shingle roof installed by an Owens Corning Preferred Contractor

Owens Corning Preferred Contractor in St. Louis.

Reliant Exteriors is a Missouri-based Owens Corning Preferred Contractor. That credential, the warranty mechanics behind it, and the real-world differences between OC's shingle lines aren't always explained well by contractors who carry the badge. This page covers what Preferred status actually requires, how the warranty math works, and how to choose between Duration and Oakridge for a St. Louis home.

Owens Corning Preferred Contractor Manufacturer-certified installer

What Preferred status actually requires.

Owens Corning's contractor network has multiple tiers. The Preferred tier is the standard certified-installer designation. Reaching it requires that the contractor:

The point of the program, from OC's side, is that a manufacturer-certified install is the only kind of install where OC stands behind the system warranty. From a homeowner's side, the value is the labor coverage that comes with the extended warranty — bare manufacturer warranties cover the shingle, but not the cost of having someone come back to fix the install.

How the system warranty works.

Owens Corning shingle warranties have two parts: the limited lifetime shingle warranty (defects in the shingle material) and the system warranty (the install plus matched components). The system warranty is the one that actually matters for most homeowners.

Within the system warranty, there are several named extensions:

Standard Limited Warranty

Default coverage on shingles installed by anyone. Defect-only. Material replacement at depreciated value after the first 10 years. Labor and tear-off costs not covered. This is what you get if a non-Preferred contractor installs OC shingles on your home.

System Protection Warranty

Available when an OC Preferred Contractor installs a qualifying system (shingles plus a defined set of OC components). Extends material coverage and adds limited labor and tear-off coverage. Most Reliant Duration installs qualify for this when the system spec is selected.

Preferred Protection Warranty

Available on qualifying full-system installs. Longer material coverage period and broader labor coverage than System Protection. Available to Preferred contractors.

Platinum Protection Warranty

OC's longest extended warranty. Restricted to Platinum-tier contractors only. Reliant is Preferred — so this tier is not something we offer. We say that out loud because some contractors quote Platinum-warranty language even when they don't carry Platinum status.

Whatever warranty applies to your install gets registered with OC by the contractor at the time of the job. Keep the warranty registration paperwork — if you ever sell the home, transferring the warranty to the next owner is a real selling point.

Duration vs Oakridge — real-world differences.

Owens Corning's two main architectural shingle lines for residential roofs are TruDefinition Duration and Oakridge. Both look "architectural" — neither is a 3-tab. The differences matter when you're choosing.

TruDefinition Duration

OC's flagship architectural shingle. Patented SureNail technology — a wide reinforcing strip across the nail line — gives Duration the highest wind warranty in OC's standard lineup (130 mph with proper installation). Heavier overall profile, deeper shadow line, premium curb appeal. The default install for most St. Louis Reliant jobs.

Oakridge

The mid-tier architectural workhorse. Lighter weight, shorter wind warranty (110 mph), slightly less dimensional depth. Real cost savings vs Duration on a typical 25-square roof. The right pick when budget is the constraint and you still want architectural — much better than going down to a 3-tab.

Color choice — what works on St. Louis brick.

St. Louis housing stock skews heavily toward brick and brick-and-siding combinations: red brick, buff brick, painted brick, brick with vinyl above the gables. The shingle has to land against the brick without fighting it.

Color samples on a board, on the actual roof, in actual St. Louis sun, is the only way to make the final call. We bring sample boards to every consultation.

The honest version of Preferred vs Platinum.

Some St. Louis roofers list "Owens Corning" in their footer with no certification at all (which is allowed — anyone can install OC shingles). Others list "Preferred" but quote warranty language that only applies to Platinum-tier contractors. The differences matter, and homeowners should ask:

Reliant is Preferred. We register the System Protection or Preferred Protection extension on qualifying installs. We won't quote Platinum-tier warranty language we can't deliver on. That's the line.

FAQ

Common questions about Owens Corning Preferred Contractors.

What does Owens Corning Preferred Contractor mean?

Owens Corning vets and certifies a small percentage of contractors as Preferred Installers. Reliant is OC-Preferred, which means installs follow OC's published specifications and the shingle warranty stays intact. It also means we can offer extended OC system warranties on qualifying jobs.

What is the difference between Duration and Oakridge?

Duration is Owens Corning's flagship architectural shingle line, with patented SureNail technology for higher wind resistance and a heavier overall profile. Oakridge is the mid-tier architectural shingle — strong warranty and a classic dimensional look, but lighter weight and at a lower price point. Most St. Louis premium installs use Duration. Oakridge is a solid choice on tighter budgets when curb appeal still matters.

How does the OC system warranty work?

When the full Owens Corning roofing system is installed by a certified Preferred Contractor — shingles, underlayment, ice & water shield, starter strip, hip and ridge cap, and ventilation — the homeowner can register an extended system warranty with longer coverage and labor inclusion than the bare-shingle warranty. The warranty terms depend on the products installed; shorter scopes get shorter warranties.

What is the difference between Preferred and Platinum status?

Preferred is the standard tier — the contractor has been vetted by OC and is certified to install to spec. Platinum is the top tier, awarded to a smaller subset of Preferred contractors based on installation volume, customer reviews, and additional credentialing. Platinum unlocks the longest extended warranties OC offers. Reliant is Preferred — we'll be transparent about that.

Will my OC shingle warranty be voided if a non-Preferred contractor installs it?

The base manufacturer's defect warranty applies regardless of who installs the shingle. What you lose with a non-Preferred install is access to the extended system warranty (which covers labor and matched materials), and you also lose Owens Corning's installation-spec backing if something goes wrong with the install — at that point it's the contractor's word against yours.
